The Borrowed by Chan Ho-Kei
Gritty detective stories in Hong Kong centered around a great detective, Kwan Chun-dok, at various times throughout his distinguished career. This novel is a series of short stories, that are not in chronological order. I hesitate to compare this to Sherlock Holmes, but at times it sort of feels like that. The main character has a way of looking through the evidence and seeing what’s really happening.
Each short story is occurring at an important time in Hong Kong’s history. It’s nice the author places the cases in different times, and the cases certainly are a reflection of the time they are set in.
I wish I could find other English novels by this author but it seems hard to find his novels in English. I don’t often get excited by detective novels, but I really, really enjoyed this one. I will keep searching for more books by this author.
